The Human Burrow
Antoine Bertin
The Human Burrow is an underground listening station, an ever-growing public library of natural vibrations, a human-scale acoustic refuge accessible day and night to humans and non-humans alike.
2 shipping containers - lined with carved cork with fitted with more than 30 hidden speaker - are buried in the beautiful Northumbrian landscape looking out over the Kielder Water. The piece is created by Artist Antoine Bertin, and provides a magical space for exploring the sounds beneath our feet, both very real and also abstract.
Artists & Engineers supported Antoine through the concept and design phase, helping to design the space, choose materials and spec and install the speaker systems, playback and interactions and lighting and power management systems. We worked closely with Kielder Art and Architecture, Newcastle based fabricators RASKL and Renewables Experts Pure Energy Renewables.
